The Camargue region of France is popular with canal boating holiday enthusiasts due to its nature-filled marsh areas, the close proximity of excellent beaches, year round good weather, but also for the great food! During this short break canal holiday you can discover the great tastes of the Camargue - ‘tielles de Sète’ (a spicy octopus pie), ‘Vin de Sable’ (sand-grown wines made from Grenache grapes), Camargue style rice and ‘fougasses d’Aigues-Mortes’ (a brioche type cake).
Ideally located at the meeting point of the Canal du Rhône à Sète and the waterways to Grau-du-Roi, our Nicols base in Aigues-Mortes sits in the shade of the 13th century ramparts that surround this magnificent fortified city.
Aigues-Mortes: walk around the 13th century ramparts and five towers, Museum of history and archaeology, Church of Notre-Dame
Grau du Roi: beaches, Seaquarium, Maritime Museum, Palais de la Mer leisure centre, Les Salins du Midi salt pans
Carnon-Plage: sand dunes beach
Palavas les Flots: Albert Dubout comedy museum, steam train museum, Festivals in the summer, famous Languedoc games such as boat-jousting, casino
Villeneuve-les-Maguelone: 9km of beaches, scenic tourist train route, Abbey of Maguelonne, Roman cathedral, Old streets
Frontignan: walks through the surrounding vineyards, 7km of beaches, St Paul fortified church, Museum of local history
Sète: Richelieu citadel, International Museum of Modest Arts, Espace Georges-Brassens, Audio-guided tours in the city, famous Languedoc games such as boat-jousting
After cruising as far as Sète it is time to think about the return leg of your journey. Look out again for the favourite places you found so far, or maybe stop off at some new ones as you cruise back to the starting base at Aigues-Mortes.
Holiday reviews from Aigues Mortes
Converted to boating holidays!
This was our first time of hiring a canal boat and this itinerary was perfect to introduce us to everything that is good about boating holidays. We loved the peace and quiet of the canal du Rhône à Sète and the stunning countryside, not to mention the many fascinating stop off points. We’re already planning our boating holiday for next year now!
