Discover river tourism
with Nicols

Did you know? France is Europe's No. 1 destination for river tourism!

With 8,200 km of navigable waterways, it offers Europe's largest network of canals and rivers suitable for boating vacations without a license.

For our European neighbors, France is a privileged destination for those wishing to discover this original type of vacation, far from the crowds and mass tourism.

If river vacations have the wind in their sails, it's also because they meet a growing demand in the Western world: all year round, we live at a frenetic pace, and we long for more peaceful moments, to take the time to recharge our batteries.
Barge vacations offer this luxury: the luxury of taking your time!

And with good reason: when you're cruising at 8 or 10 km/hour (the speed limit on most canals), you take the time to do things, to navigate, to maneuver, to observe your surroundings... Even a simple weekend river cruise is a unique experience, to be shared by two, with friends or family. Are you a fan of SLOW TOURISM? Don't hesitate to choose a barge vacation!

Nicols, a specialist in river tourism

If Nicols is recognized in the world of river tourism, it's first and foremost because we have the dual skills of builder and rental company. For 35 years, we've been building our boats in Cholet, Maine et Loire (49). Our central booking office offers them for rental, and after each of our customers' boat trips, we collect their opinions on their recent cruise.
Listening to their comments and suggestions for improvement enables us to constantly improve our products, so that we can offer boaters boats that perfectly meet their expectations.

As a result, Nicols has gained a reputation in Europe as a specialist in river tourism, with boats renowned for their
comfort and safety: enough to satisfy all crews, with young children as well as senior citizens on board!

Comfort

The design of a river boat without a license features a flat bottom, unlike a sea boat with a V-shaped hull.
This optimizes interior layout.
The volumes are similar to those found in a motor home or camper van, with bedrooms, bathrooms and a fully-equipped kitchen...
In addition, many boats offer an outside terrace for outdoor dining, and a double helm (inside + outside) to enjoy the sun!

Safety

NICOLS boats are renowned for their maneuverability and ease of access (single-storey decks for the Sedan and Estivale ranges).
What's more, made in France, our NICOLS boats comply with French safety legislation, and feature double-rail balconies and handrails to facilitate movement around the boat and limit the risk of falling. This is a major advantage, making NICOLS one of the preferred brands for river tourism enthusiasts, especially families with young children.

Little extras to enhance your cruise

Bicycles

Indispensable for exploring your mooring, visiting local villages and sights, or simply going to buy bread. Bikes can also be a great way to meet new people and make your stay unforgettable.

Adult bikes, children's bikes and baby seats are available at most of our bases: remember to reserve them before you leave!

Fishing

You can fish the canals and rivers as long as you buy a permit in advance, which is available from tackle stores, some tobacconists and on the Internet at www.cartedepeche.fr.

A card valid for 7 days costs around €32 in France and €40 in Germany. In Portugal, the card costs €25, whatever the length of your cruise.

Happy fishing!

Wifi on board

Tablet, computer, cell phone... stay connected throughout your cruise! Most of our bases offer an "on-board wifi" service, enabling you to connect several devices simultaneously*. For more information, please contact us.

*subject to network coverage, which varies from region to region.

The barbecue

Here's the equipment that goes hand in hand with vacations: take your barbecue / plancha on board, and enjoy memorable grilling parties!

For your convenience, most of our bases offer you the possibility of renting gas-powered appliances. Find out more before you leave.

Bathroom linen

Are you arriving by plane or train, or are you short of space in your suitcases?

Nicols offers a practical solution at all its departure bases: bathroom linen kit rental (including 1 washcloth + 1 bath towel + 1 bath sheet) and kitchen linen kit rental (including 1 hand towel and 2 dish towels) - ask for them before boarding.

Housekeeping package

If you're leaving in a hurry, or simply don't feel like cleaning up when you leave your boat, our Nicols bases offer you a cleaning package (from €70 to €200 depending on the package) to save you the hassle of picking up the broom and rag: take advantage of it!

NB: it's best to inform your base as soon as you take possession of the boat, to facilitate organization when you return at the end of your cruise. Thank you for your understanding!

All inclusive

It's vacation time! Choose the ALL INCLUSIVE option and cast off with peace of mind!

Your all-inclusive package includes: 1 river guide + 2 bicycles + housekeeping package + kitchen linen kit + bathroom linen kits + your consumables package (fuel / gas)...

Consult us for prices, which vary according to the model of boat chosen.

Deck mattresses

New! Take on board a comfortable, floating, folding and easy-to-stow mattress for pleasant, relaxing lounging sessions on the roof or foredeck of your Nicols boat!

The swimming pool: a Nicols exclusive!

The piscinette is a unique concept on the river tourism market, a NICOLS EXCLUSIVE! Treat yourself to the pleasure you need to make your river vacations a complete success with our towable pool, whose water is heated and filtered...

Adaptable to most boats, it will be the little "plus" that will make all the difference to the success of your river cruise!

The + : 12 Volts / 220 Volts converter

On board your boat, the only source of power is the boat's battery (except for top-of-the-range models equipped with a generator).
If you sail for 4 to 5 hours a day, your battery will recharge sufficiently to ensure the boat's autonomy in terms of light, or to run the domestic pump (for water supply), fridge (if electric), etc...

If you need to connect electrical equipment during your cruise, there are several solutions:

  • You'll find a cigar lighter in the cockpit, so you can plug in a cell phone, for example (in this case, you'll need the right cable for the cigar lighter).
  • You can hire a converter from the base (for a modest lump sum of around €12): it will enable you to convert the electricity supplied by the battery from 12 volts to 220V. But be careful! You can recharge low-consumption appliances (max. 150W) such as telephones, computers, tablets, children's consoles, etc., but never appliances that consume more energy (over 150W) or use electric resistance (hair dryers, electric coffee makers, etc.): remember, you're always powered by the battery, which has a limited supply!

If you absolutely must use 220V with a high power consumption (e.g. electrical resistance device) or a permanent connection (e.g. breathing apparatus at night), plug in to the electrical terminals in the harbors in the evening - generally listed in your river guide - using the extension cord provided free of charge on board your boat. Or plug directly into your boat's shore power socket (for more recent models).

Preserving the ecosystem of our waterways

By choosing to rent a boat without a Sp. license, you've made the choice of a holiday in the heart of nature. in the heart of nature. The quality of the environment in which you'll be boating is a major factor in the success of your vacation. Let's protect nature together Our small gestures can have big effects!

  • Take the train to your nautical base. In France, more than half of our are located less than 10 km from a train station.
  • When mooring, be careful not to damage the plant life around you, and follow the instructions given by our teams during navigation training.
  • Don't leave a trace of your passage: collect your garbage, deposit it in the spaces provided for this purpose, and remember to selective sorting.
  • Navigate gently and carefully to avoid damaging the banks. Here too, during the training course, our teams will show you the speeds you need to respect to take care of the waterways you'll be surveying.
  • To take care of the boat and our environment, we offer you a welcome kit on the day of your embarkation, including biodegradable cleaning products. If you bring your own cleaning and hygiene products, please use biodegradable products too.

Water is a precious resource that must be shared for a variety of uses: drinking water, wildlife, agriculture, fishing, river tourism... To save this resource, we need to limit the number of individual boats passing through locks as much as possible: remember to group together with other boats during lockages.
