A historic insight of the Camargue with our weekend boating holiday

Hire a Nicols canal boat and dive into a region steeped in history and heritage. Your journey along the Canal du Rhône à Sète begins at Bellegarde and ends at the medieval fortified city of Aigues-Mortes. Along the way enjoy excellent local gastronomy and look out for the famous wild horses and bulls of the Camargue.

Departure base

From the Nicols base at Bellegarde you can travel by canal boat the entire length of the Canal du Rhône à Sète, meandering through the heart of the beautiful Camargue and alongside the sun-drenched beaches of the Mediterranean.

Places to see and things to do

Bellegarde: makers of Clairette de Bellegarde white wine, Broussan chapel, Oil mill, Roman aqueduct

Saint Gilles: The abbey (a UNESCO site), Museum of the Romanesque House

Franquevaux: Horse-drawn carriage rides in the heart of Camargue, meet manadiers (wild horse herders) and learn about their work

Gallician: vineyards and wine cellars, Scamander Nature Reserve, raised trail for walks across the marshes

Aigues-Mortes: walk around the 13th century ramparts and five towers, Museum of history and archaeology, Church of Notre-Dame

After cruising as far as Aigues-Mortes on the Canal du Rhône à Sète it is time to think about the return leg of your journey. Look out again for the favourite places you found so far as you cruise back to the starting base at Bellegarde.

Moor and explore!
We loved cruising in the heart of nature on the Canal du Rhône à Sète. The highlight of our boating holiday though had to be arriving at sunset and mooring our canal boat at the foot of the ramparts in the heart of Aigues-Mortes, before going off and exploring the fortified city.
