Voyage through history

From the Rogny locks Briare canal bridge at the start of your one-way boating holiday, you will sail from one historic sight to the next. Explore the monastic city of La Charité-sur-Loire then Marseille-lès-Aubigny, before reaching the conclusion of your canal boat adventure at Plagny.

Departure base

Located in the Loire Valley, the canal boat base at Rogny is one of Nicol’s closest bases to Paris (150 km).  It is a fantastic starting point for a boating holiday whether it’s a weekend several days or a week.

Places to see and things to do

Rogny: The staircase of seven locks designed by Henry IV. Fireworks display from the locks at the end of July.

Briare:
The Briare Aqueduct – sail across this 662 metre-long canal bridge, inspired by Gustav, ‘Musée des Emaux’ - museum of Enamels, ‘Musée des deux Marines’ – discovery centre for the Briare Canal and the Canal latéral à la Loire

Châtillon-sur-Loire:
The Mantelot lock, 12th century ruins of Château Gaillard, 16th and 17th century wine growers’ houses, Beaches at the edge of La Loire, the island of Ousson

St Satur/ St Thibault:
Old abbey, recreation centre with swimming pools, tennis courts and mini-golf, ‘Sancerrois’ golf club (18 holes)

Sancerre:
‘Maison des Sancerre’ wine museum, ‘La tour des fiefs’ 14th century château remains, splendid view of the Loire valley, 16th century belfry, many shops selling art and crafts.

La Charité-sur-Loire:
Follow in the footsteps of the pilgrims of Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, 16th century stone bridge, Eglise Notre Dame (8th century roman architecture), historic ramparts and fortifications.

Marseille-lès-Aubigny:
Old maritime town, the natural meeting point of the Canal latéral à la Loire and the Canal du Berry,

Pont-canal du Guétin:
Sail across the 18-arch Guetin canal bridge, the “Bec d'Allier” protected natural area with hiking trails and bird observatory.

Plagny:
Near (6km) to city of Nevers – capital of earthenware, Former F1 race circuit and ‘Musée Ligier F1’ at Magny Cours (10km)

Your one-way boating holiday ends at Plagny where you will return your canal boat to the Nicols base and perhaps make the short trips to Nevers or Magny Cours for some final exploration before heading home.

Peaceful moments
We enjoyed this peaceful cruise on the Canal latéral à la Loire, living to the rhythm of the canal with its relaxed pace as we enjoyed the wooded landscapes while sailing and discovered the treasures of nature and charming towns on route.
