Hire a self-drive canal boat for a weekend away in the Camargue. This two-day itinerary leads you through the nature reserve and marshes towards the beaches of the Mediterranean. Stop off at the fortified city of Aigues-Mortes or the seaside resorts of Grau-du-Roi, Carnon or Palavas-les-Flots.
Ideally located at the meeting point of the Canal du Rhône à Sète and the waterways to Grau-du-Roi, our Nicols base in Aigues-Mortes sits in the shade of the 13th century ramparts that surround this magnificent fortified city.
Aigues-Mortes: walk around the 13th century ramparts and five towers, Museum of history and archaeology, Church of Notre-Dame
Grau du Roi: beaches, Seaquarium, Maritime Museum, Palais de la Mer leisure centre, Les Salins du Midi salt pans
Carnon-Plage: sand dunes beach
Palavas les Flots: Albert Dubout comedy museum, steam train museum, Festivals in the summer, famous Languedoc games such as boat-jousting, casino
After cruising as far as Palavas les Flots it is time to think about the return leg of your journey. Look out again for the favourite places you found so far, or maybe stop off at some new ones as you cruise back to the starting base at Aigues-Mortes.
Holiday reviews from Aigues Mortes
We can’t recommend it enough!
We couldn’t believe how much we packed into just a weekend. We saw beautiful landscapes, visited the medieval city of Aigues-Mortes and enjoyed a relaxing day at the beach. We even managed to stumble across a tournament of the Languedoc games while we were visiting Palavas-les-Flots.
