Description of
the boating holiday

Boating holidays amongst the chateaux and vineyards of Burgundy

Hire a canal boat for a holiday that will see you visit the many treasures of Burgundy. You’ll navigate along the Canal de Bourgogne – one of the most iconic waterways in France. Must see stop-off points include visiting the vineyards of Tonnerrois and exploring the chateaux at Tanlay and Ancy-le-Franc.

Departure base

The Nicols base at Brienon, located at the northern-most end of the Canal de Bourgogne, is the perfect starting point for a number of different boating holiday itineraries as it is the meeting point of the waterways of the Canal de Bourgogne, River Yonne and Canal du Nivernais.

Places to see and things to do

Brienon: 13th and 16th century church, Oval shaped historic bath, the Perched Theatre in the old town hall - a laureate of the Regional Heritage Award.

Saint-Florentin: Canal surrounded by two rivers (Armance and Armancon), Church with beautiful stained glass windows and a terrace which offers panoramic views across the old town and the valley.

Tonnerre: Old town built on a hill, The Fosse Dionne (old fountain and baths), Church of Saint-Pierre built on a rock terrace, l'hôtel Dieu (one of the largest medieval hospitals dating from 1293), l'hôtel d'Uzès: the historic mansion and birthplace of the knight Eon.

Renaissance buildings of the Abbey of Quincy and Château de Tanlay, 9-hole golf course in the grounds of Château de Tanlay!

Château d'Ancy-le-Franc locate on the banks of the canal, various museums of art, pottery and ceramic

After cruising as far as Ancy-le-Franc on the Canal de Bourgogne it is time to think about the return leg of your journey. Look out again for the favourite places you found so far, or maybe stop off at some new ones as you cruise back to the starting base at Brienon.

A total change of scenery
This was a completely new type of holiday for us – enjoying meals in the open air on the deck of a boat, peace and calm on the water, travelling through locks and meeting the lock keepers and watching beautiful countryside and our surroundings pass as we made our way from place to place.
