Starting from the Nicols base at Brienon-sur-Armançon, this canal boat holiday in the heart of Burgundy takes you to the flower-filled and picturesque town of Laroche-Migennes. From here our suggested itinerary sees you and your crew join the River Yonne and a cruise to Auxerre. Once at Auxerre, moor up and set off on foot to explore the waterside quays and the narrow streets of the historic town centre.
The Nicols base at Brienon, located at the northern-most end of the Canal de Bourgogne, is the perfect starting point for a number of different boating holiday itineraries as it is the meeting point of the waterways of the Canal de Bourgogne, River Yonne and Canal du Nivernais.
Brienon: 13th and 16th century church, Oval shaped historic bath, the Perched Theatre in the old town hall - a laureate of the Regional Heritage Award
Laroche-Migennes: a winner of ‘towns in bloom’ and located at the beginning of the Canal de Bourgogne, famed for its cabaret shows and stars, 5th century Gallo-Roman mosaic
Auxerre: Cathedral St Etienne, Abbey church of Saint-Germain, Carolingian crypts, Clock Tower, Timber frame houses
After cruising as far as Auxerre it is time to think about the return leg of your journey. Look out again for the favourite places you found so far, or maybe stop off at some new ones as you cruise back to the starting base at Brienon.
A fantastic spring getaway idea!
Our crew was already regular fans of being on boats out at sea – we sailed regularly with friends and all decided that we wanted to discover what it would be like to experience a break on inland waterways for once. We all are now hooked and had already decided before returning our boat back to the Nicols base that we would book again for next year, this time in Charente!
