Our canal boat hire base is located at Rogny in the Val de Loire. It is one of Nicols closest bases to Paris making it a great destination for a weekend barge trip or a short break holiday on the river! Those after a much longer trip can undertake the wonderful "Centre of France loop" cruising on the Nivernais, Bourgogne and Val de Loire: 3 weeks of exceptional canal boating!

Heading south on the Canal de Briare and then the Canal Latéral à la Loire means your boating holiday will be packed full of natural and historical highlights:

  • Rogny and its 7 locks built under Henri IV reign;
  • Briare and its canal aqueduct, designed by Eiffel,
  • Sancerre and Pouilly, with their world-famous vineyards;
  • La Charité sur Loire (town famous for literature and bookshops) listed as a Unesco World Heritage site is an essential stop-off point along the St James' Way;
  • The Bec d'Allier, meeting point between the Loire and Allier, is one of the last untamed rivers in Europe, listed as a "Panda site" by the WWF, to the delight of nature lovers everywhere...

If you choose to travel north along the Canal du Loing, don't miss out on Montargis – the little Venice of Gâtinais

You can also explore the Canal du Nivernais by barge from our Nicols canal boat hire base at Plagny close to Nevers… Nicols also offers boating holidays with one-way itineraries from Rogny to Plagny (or vice versa) which allows greater cruising time to enjoy the beautiful landscapes and many interesting sites you’ll come across on route.

Itinerary 2: The Gâtinais venice short break

Course: Rogny – Montargis – Rogny (66km - 28 locks - 16h00)
