A little history... the canal from the Rhône to Sète is the logical extension of Pierre Paul Riquet's structure (creator of the Canal du Midi in the 17th century). The work was staggered over several centuries to get what was first known as the "pond canal" up and running. In 1811, it eventually joined up with a branch of the Rhône at Beaucaire.
